Bridging the Gap Between Church and Community
Trinity United Methodist Church is very civic-minded and places a high priority on serving the community. Along with this community-minded spirit is our prime location on Long Avenue at the hub of many active and growing neighborhoods. This makes Trinity’s facilities a natural place for bringing church and community together.
We serve as a regular meeting place for such organizations as Weight Watchers , the Conway Mom’s Club , the Cub Scouts, the Boy Scouts and Brownies .
Trinity also opens its doors for a week-long grief day camp called Camp Linz’s Kids sponsored by the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health.
Linz’s Story
No one loved his or her sister more than Lindsay loved Lorie. Lorie was born with a birth defect two years before Lindsay, but Lindsay always acted as the big sister because of Lorie’s disabilities. When Lorie died four days before Lindsay’s tenth birthday, Lindsay was devastated. She struggled with her feelings for years before moving to the Carolinas and becoming involved in a local hospice’s counseling program for children, Camp UbU.
The first year she attended the week-long camp for grieving children, Lindsay came to find friends just like her, friends that understood the special feelings she had. For two summers in a row, Lindsay met with her adult “buddy” and participated in the activities of the camp. She loved her new friends and even continued writing to a few of them after camp ended.
When Lindsay was 16-years-old, she was asked to become a big buddy to a younger child. Lindsay was so proud! The first day of camp she came home and said, ‘I have the cutest kid in the whole camp as by buddy!” The pair bonded so well that their photo was used for the camp’s brochure the following summer.
Camp UbU helped Lindsay to move through her grief for her sister in a healthy manner. She grew into a bright, talented, beautiful and strong young lady, partly due to the assistance and experiences she had at Camp UbU. Unfortunately, the local hospice program lost its funding for the grief camp in 2000 and Camp UbU came to an end.Tragically, in August of that same year, Lindsay Bennett was killed in an automobile accident.
In an effort to the meet the needs of grieving children in Horry County, the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health launched Camp Linz’s Kids in the summer of 2004 as a tribute to honor Lindsay’s memory. To continue helping grieving children with Camp Linz’s Kids the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health needs financial donations and volunteers.
